Brief Historical Background of Sex Reassignment Surgery and its Current State in Korea
Kim Jin-Hong

Abstract
This review includes the brief history of sexology, the birth records of international study group, the world professional associations for transgender health (WPATH), and its SOC(standards of care; 7th version, 2011). The SOC contains topics on mental health, hormone therapy, surgical options and socio-legal issues. Health for people with gender identity disorder is promoted through public policies and legal reforms that promote tolerance and equity for gender and sexual diversity and that eliminate prejudice, discrimination, and stigma. The goal and purpose of SOC lies on the afore-mentioned health-related issues. The Korean version of SOC was initially legislated in 1990, based on the 3rd version of SOC, but no more revision of it has done yet. The first case of male to female sex reassignment surgery was performed in 1986 and female to male surgery in 1991. Nevertheless, there has been no nation-wide epidemiological study on this congenital disorder of gender identity in Korea yet.
